A sample article...

For the School of Journalism, every week we are supposed to write a news story about a particular type of story. It is totally fictional so we can make up as much as we'd like. This was first one and I thought I would post it so you can read a sample of writing.

This week, we were supposed to write about a neighborhood event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of something in Australia. Again, we were told to make it a celebration about anything we want, and this way, if you truly know me, you might guess what I would make it about...

Clucking for You

“Eating chicken from Cluckers for You is a taste of heaven, no matter where you are in the world.” Denise, a true Perth-ian native, makes that statement as she attended the Cluckers for You event this past Saturday.

On January 18th, there was a huge celebration in HBF stadium to applaud having Cluckers for You in Perth for 50 years. “A lot of people say they can’t imagine what life would be like if there was no Cluckers for You,” says one of the owners and managers of Cluckers, Chris Smith. He acknowledges that he had a lot of fear when he decided to open the first one, but after a slow start, it sky-rocketed and keeps growing today.

In fact, the first celebration, after Cluckers had been in Perth for 10 years, they decided to host the celebration in the fields next to the HBF stadium, thinking that there was no way they would need the entire stadium. However, there were so many people they had to move some of the activities to Hyde Park to keep the celebration going.

Now, at the stadium, there are quite a few stands. Many of the stands are to purchase the foods, which are free if you are wearing a cow-like costume. Cows are the mascot for Cluckers, as they highly encourage you to eat chicken instead of beef. A few stands have games, such as a small ring toss for children to win cow toys. There is a large ring toss where the contestant has to heave a heavy egg-shaped hula hoop to a single pole that is 50 meters away. If you win this, you get a rugby ball with the Cluckers for You logo on it. Frisbees are free for everyone, but there are only 500 of them.

Even though the name was changed to symbolize a change in cultures and it is owned by true Australians, the owners—Chris and his wife, Ann—state that they learned a lot about their business from studying the Chick-fil-A in America. One major similarity is taking Sunday off. “Sunday is a day a rest and rejuvenation—feeling God’s presence is your choice, but He’s there with you either way,” states Ann Smith.

While it may have a lot of similarities to the American Chick-fil-A by having almost all of the same dishes, it still is truly Aussie. Vegemite is a common sauce, placed right next to ketchup in the stands near the cash registers. They also added lamington as a part of the desserts, and you can ask for "a lot” on your chicken sandwich if you wish for BBQ sauce, salad, pineapple and a fried egg on it as well.

Originally for their 10th year celebration, Cluckers for You thought 100 people at the max would attend. However, with nearly 700 people attending this year, and approximately 600 last year, it truly shows the love of Cluckers for You just can’t be stop growing.

Well, I hope you like it. I'm secretly hoping someone here in Australia might read this and want to make it come true...
